5 Days In New England | Travel Guide
With so much to see and do, planning a trip to New England can be overwhelming, especially if you have limited time. If you only have 5 days in New England, it’s important to make the most of your days.
New England is a charming region in the northeastern United States, known for its rich history, picturesque landscapes, and delicious seafood. We love where we live and I am excited to share with you some of my favorite things to do in this region!
In this blog post, we’ll provide you with a guide on how to spend an unforgettable 5 days in New England.
Get ready for a memorable adventure in one of America’s most beautiful regions!
Day 1: Cape Cod
If you only have one day to explore Cape Cod, there are plenty of exciting activities and sights to experience.
Start by taking a ferry to either Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard, two charming islands off the coast of Cape Cod known for their scenic beaches, lighthouses, and charming towns.
Once you arrive, rent a bike or car to explore the island and take in the stunning coastal scenery.
Alternatively, spend your day exploring the charming towns and historic sites of Cape Cod itself, such as the iconic Cape Cod National Seashore or the historic Kennedy Compound.
Don’t forget to indulge in some fresh seafood at one of the region’s many seafood shacks or restaurants during your 5 days in New England!
Day 2: Boston
If you’re spending one day in Boston, the city has a plethora of sights and activities to offer. Begin by walking the iconic Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile trail that takes you through 16 historical landmarks that tell the story of the American Revolution.
Next, take a stroll through the charming cobblestone streets of Beacon Hill, or explore the bustling neighborhoods of the North End or Back Bay.
Don’t miss out on a visit to the iconic Boston Public Library or the world-renowned Museum of Fine Arts.
Finally, end your day with a mouth-watering bowl of chowder at one of the city’s many seafood restaurants.
Day 3: NH or Maine Seacoast Town
If you have one day to explore the Seacoast, be sure to visit the charming town of Portsmouth and the historic Strawbery Banke Museum.
Start your day with a visit to the museum, which features over 40 historic buildings that bring to life the stories of the people who lived in the area from the 1600s to the 1950s.
Afterward, explore the charming downtown area of Portsmouth, with its quaint shops and excellent restaurants. Take a stroll along the picturesque waterfront and visit the USS Albacore Museum, a decommissioned submarine that offers a glimpse into naval history.
Finally, end your day with a delicious seafood dinner at one of the many excellent seafood restaurants in the area.
Alternatively, if you’re spending one day in Ogunquit or York, Maine, there are plenty of activities and sights to take in.
Begin your day with a leisurely walk along the Marginal Way. This is a picturesque mile-long path that hugs the coast and offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Then, head to the charming village of Ogunquit for some shopping and dining, or visit the iconic Perkins Cove to watch the lobster boats come in and out.
In York, explore the historic York Village and the fascinating Old York Historical Society. End your day with a visit to Nubble Lighthouse, one of Maine’s most photographed landmarks.
Day 4 & 5: NH White Mountains
Now for my favorite part of New England. You need at least two days to explore the White Mountains of New Hampshire and a visit to Franconia Notch State Park is a must.
Start your day with a scenic drive through the notch, taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and forests. This drive is what made me fall in love with New Hampshire!
Then, take a short hike to the Flume Gorge, a stunning natural wonder that features a cascading waterfall and towering granite walls.
Next, visit the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway for a ride to the top of the mountain. At the top you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
End your day with a visit to the charming town of Lincoln, where you can indulge in some delicious local cuisine and browse the unique shops and boutiques.
On day two, start your day with a scenic drive on the Kancamagus Highway, taking in the beautiful foliage. Then, head to Diana’s Baths for a short hike to stunning waterfalls. Stop for lunch at one of the many local eateries before exploring the tax-free shopping options in North Conway Village.
Don’t forget to take a detour to Cathedral Ledge for breathtaking views of the surrounding White Mountains.
Finally, end the day with a relaxing train ride on the Conway Scenic Railroad.

Acadia National Park, Maine
If you have one day to explore Acadia National Park, there are many sights and activities to experience.
Begin your day with a hike up Cadillac Mountain, the highest peak on the east coast of the United States, to catch the sunrise over the park.
Then, take a scenic drive along the Park Loop Road, stopping at iconic sights like Thunder Hole and Sand Beach. Visit Jordan Pond House for a classic Maine lobster roll and stunning views of the park’s crystal-clear waters.
End your day with a leisurely walk along the carriage roads or a visit to the Bass Harbor Lighthouse for a quintessential Maine coastal view.
New England is a region with something for everyone, from scenic coastal landscapes to historic sites and delicious cuisine. I’ve lived many places, and New England is by far my favorite.
Spending 5 days in New England allows you to experience the best of what the region has to offer. From exploring the charming islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard to taking in the historic landmarks of Boston’s Freedom Trail.
A visit to the picturesque White Mountains or Acadia National Park offers breathtaking views and outdoor adventures. Finally, the coastal towns of Ogunquit and York offer a charming and quintessential New England experience.
