Travel Trailer Must-Haves for More Enjoyable Camping

We take our 2016 Forest River Salem Cruise Lite (Callie The Camper) camping many times during the summer and we plan on taking her down to Florida for 6 weeks this winter. We also really enjoy sharing the love and renting her out on Outdoorsy.

These experiences have taught us that investing in the right travel trailer essentials are imperative for an enjoyable camping experience.

Caveat: We like to camp. Sure we love glamping to an extent but we enjoy being in nature away from the noise of technology. So these items listed below are bare minimums.

First Aid Kit

When you are traveling and camping with kids, bumps and scrapes are bound to happen. Especially when you do lots of exploring and hiking. This First Aid Kit is a great kit with all the essentials!

Durable RV Dumping Hose

You don’t want to skimp on this. Dumping tanks is not our favorite thing to do. But we want to make sure we are being as clean and safe as possible. This hose makes things easy and seamless!

RV Sewer Hose Support

You want gravity to work in your favor when it comes to dumping gray and black water tanks. This hose support does a great job at convincing things to go where they should without any effort on your part.

RV Water Pressure Regulator

We really didn’t think this was a necessity and tried a couple of campground stays without one. It’s worth spending money on. Trust me. You don’t want toilet overflow spraying out of the toilet every time your kids use the bathroom.

Some campgrounds water pressure is very high, which can also cause leaks in your system, which we have unfortunately experienced. Take it from us. Purchase a water pressure regulator.

Hooks

I am a bit of a minimalist. Not full blown, but I definitely lean that way fairly often. My number one pet peeve is when counters and floors are cluttered. Our camper is a small 21 footer so it is imperative that we make use of our space or it will get cluttered very quickly.

We use command hooks to hang up keys, our broom, our laundry bag, and some photo frames. We also have TWO over the door hooks on the bathroom door going both directions! Lastly above our stove we have a tension rod with hooks so that we can hang hand towels, mugs, spatulas, and etc.

RV Water Hoses

We use this kink free RV fresh water hose that is only used to get city water into your trailer, or to fill the fresh water tank. The ideal length of hose depends on what your setup is, but we find a 25′ hose to be about right.

Camp Stove

I am all about cooking over an open fire. We have a dutch oven that is fun to use. The kids and I also love cooking things in aluminum foil or on a stick. However, there comes a time when you don’t want to cook over an open fire…and you also don’t want to cook inside the camper. (I don’t recommend cooking bacon or fish in the camper). This is where a trusty camp stove can come swoop in and save the day! This one would do the trick!

RV Bubble Level

It is hard to just “eyeball” the level of the camper after you park it into your site. These are cheap little bubble levels that you can put on the side of your camper to make sure you are straight!

RV Door Mat

We actually have two mats set on top of each other sitting in the doorway of our camper. Once we park the camper at our site I take one and put it on the ground. That way the kids can take their shoes off at the first mat, walk up the stair, step on a second mat, and then come into the camper. It has drastically decreased my need to constantly sweep! We also use these outdoor sinks to wash the kid’s feet sometimes. (They love taking their shoes off and running around in the dirt despite my many pleas).

Collapsible Trash Can

We don’t keep a trash can inside the camper. We use this one and leave it outside. It zips up but if there are a high concentration of bears we will bring it just inside the door at night (or in the bed of the truck).
