As an East Coaster, I have always been fascinated by the unique landscapes and natural wonders that the national parks in the west coast of the United States have to offer. I am so used to the lush greenery, rolling hills, and rocky beaches of the Atlantic seaboard. But when I first visited the west coast parks of the United States, I was blown away by the sheer diversity of its landscapes.

Unlike the East Coast, the western United States boasts stunning deserts, towering mountains, and otherworldly rock formations that seem to defy the laws of physics. The sight of a 14,000-foot mountain peak or the vast expanse of a desert landscape is simply awe-inspiring.

Exploring the national parks in the West has been a transformative experience for me, providing me with a newfound appreciation for the beauty and diversity of our natural world. 

So if you are thinking about exploring the natural wonders of the West, I highly recommend visiting the national parks in the west coast and other protected areas that this region has to offer.

West Coast Parks

Washington

North Cascades National Park

The North Cascades National Park is located in Washington State where you can see some of the most beautiful mountains, forests, and rivers in the whole country.

There are lots of animals that live in the park too, like bears, deer, and even mountain goats! You can go hiking, camping, or just take a nice picnic with your family. 

The North Cascades National Park is sometimes called the “American Alps” because it has so many tall and steep mountains. So if you ever get the chance to visit, make sure you bring your hiking boots and camera!

Mount Rainier National Park

Mount Rainier is a big, beautiful, snow-covered mountain that you can see from miles away. It’s really special because it’s actually a volcano! But don’t worry, it’s not active right now. 

In the park, there are also lots of forests, lakes, and rivers. You can go hiking, fishing, or even take a sled down the snow in the winter! And if you’re lucky, you might even see some animals, like deer, elk, or bears. 

So next time you’re in Washington State, make sure to visit Mount Rainier National Park!

Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park is located in Washington State and has a little bit of everything! 

There are huge, green rainforests that you can explore and see all sorts of animals like deer, elk, and even black bears. There are also lots of rivers and lakes where you can go fishing or swimming. 

Another special thing about Olympic National Park is the coast. You can see some amazing beaches with huge rocks and lots of tide pools where you can find all sorts of sea creatures. 

And if you’re really lucky, you might even see some whales swimming in the ocean!

Oregon

Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake National Park, located in southern Oregon, is home to one of the deepest lakes in the world. 

This stunning lake was formed by a volcanic eruption over 7,000 years ago, and is known for its crystal-clear waters and stunning blue color. 

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can hike the park’s many trails or even take a boat tour of the lake.

California

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves stunning views and outdoor activities. Located in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, this park is home to towering granite cliffs, crystal-clear streams, and lush forests. 

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can hike to the top of Half Dome or explore the park’s many trails by bike. Don’t forget to stop by Yosemite Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in North America.

This is one of the more popular national parks in the west coast.

Redwood National and State Parks

Redwood National and State Parks, located on California’s northern coast, are home to some of the tallest trees in the world. 

These ancient redwoods can grow up to 379 feet tall and are over 2,000 years old. They also have a lush understory of ferns, some of whose ancestry can be traced back 325 million years! That makes them older than dinosaurs!

Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lassen Volcanic National Park is a park in California where you can see some amazing volcanoes.

There are lots of different types of volcanoes in the park, like big ones with craters and smaller ones that shoot out steam and gas. You can also see lots of hot springs and mud pots that bubble and steam! 

But there’s more to the park than just volcanoes. There are also lots of forests, meadows, and lakes where you can go hiking, fishing, or just enjoy a picnic with your family. 

If you’re lucky, you might even see some animals like bears, deer, bald eagles, or the Sierra Nevada red fox which is one of the rarest animals in California!

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park

At this amazing part of the west coast parks you can see some of the biggest and oldest trees in the world! 

The park is home to giant sequoias, which are some of the tallest and widest trees on Earth. You can even walk and drive through a tunnel carved out of one of these massive trees! 

But that’s not all. There are also lots of mountains, canyons, and rivers where you can go hiking, camping, or just enjoy the scenery. And if you’re lucky, you might even see some animals like bears, mountain lions, or marmots.

Pinnacles National Park

Pinnacles National Park is a really unique place in California where you can see some amazing rock formations.

The park is home to huge cliffs and spires made of volcanic rock that have been eroded over time. You can even see caves where bats live! 

There are also lots of animals that live in the park, like condors, bobcats, and even rattlesnakes! You can go hiking, rock climbing, or just enjoy a picnic with your family. 

And the best part? Pinnacles National Park is a great place to stargaze! Since it’s away from the city lights, you can see lots of stars and even the Milky Way!

Channel Islands National Park

This west coast park is made up of five islands that are home to lots of different animals, like seals, sea lions, and dolphins. You can go hiking, kayaking, or even snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters around the islands.

The beloved children’s book Island of the Blue Dolphins takes place here.

Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park, located in southern California, is named after the park’s famous Joshua trees, which can grow up to 40 feet tall. 

These trees are actually a type of yucca, a member of the agave family. These trees are unique to the Mojave Desert. 

In addition to exploring the park’s many hiking trails, you can also stargaze at night, as Joshua Tree is known for its clear skies and stunning views of the stars.

Death Valley National Park

Death Valley National Park is a unique place in California where you can see some of the hottest and driest places on Earth.

Some animals, like the roadrunner, can survive without drinking any water, ever. The park is also home to the lowest point in North America. 

Make sure to bring lots of water and sunscreen, since it can get really hot in these west coast parks.

Rocky Mountain Region

Montana

Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park, located in Montana, is home to some of the most stunning alpine scenery in the United States. 

This park is home to 26 glaciers, as well as hundreds of lakes, waterfalls, and valleys. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can hike the famous Highline Trail, which offers stunning views of the park’s peaks and valleys. 

And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a grizzly bear or a mountain goat along the way.

Wyoming

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is famous for its geysers, hot springs, and bubbling mud pots. 

Old Faithful, the park’s most famous geyser, erupts approximately every 90 minutes and can shoot water up to 185 feet in the air! The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including grizzly bears, wolves, and bison. 

Keep your eyes peeled for these magnificent creatures as you explore the park’s many hiking trails.

Yellowstone is one of the most popular national parks in the west coast.

Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton National Park is a beautiful place in Wyoming where you can see some of the most stunning mountains in the United States! 

The park is home to the Teton Range, which is a huge mountain range with peaks that are over 12,000 feet tall! You can go hiking, camping, or even fishing in the rivers and lakes around the mountains. 

There are also lots of animals that live in the park, like moose, elk, and even grizzly bears. And if you’re really lucky, you might even see a bald eagle flying overhead! 

Colorado

Black Canyon of the Gunnison

This park is located in Colorado and is where you can see one of the deepest, narrowest canyons in the country.

The park is home to the Black Canyon, which was carved out by the Gunnison River over millions of years. You can go hiking, camping, or even rock climbing in the canyon. 

But the best part about the Black Canyon is the view! The rocks are so dark that they look black, and the walls of the canyon are so steep that they look like they go on forever. 

So if you love nature and want to see some amazing scenery, you should definitely go to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park!

Rocky Mountain National Park

If you love hiking, fishing, and wildlife, then Rocky Mountain National Park is the perfect destination for you. 

This park in northern Colorado is home to 60 peaks that are over 12,000 feet tall (some 14,000!), as well as hundreds of miles of hiking trails and pristine alpine lakes. 

Keep your eyes peeled for elk, bighorn sheep, and other wildlife as you explore this stunning landscape. This is a super popular destination for west coast parks.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Here you can see the tallest sand dunes in North America.

The park is home to huge sand dunes that were formed by winds blowing sand from nearby mountains. You can go hiking, sandboarding, or even just relax and play in the sand! 

There are also lots of mountains and forests nearby where you can go camping, fishing, or even horseback riding. 

So if you’re looking for a fun and unique adventure, you should definitely visit Great Sand Dunes National Park!

Mesa Verde National park

Mesa Verde is an interesting place in Colorado where you can see some of the best-preserved Native American ruins in the country! 

The park is home to ancient cliff dwellings and buildings that were built by the Ancestral Pueblo people over 700 years ago. You can go on guided tours to see the ruins up close, and learn about how these people lived and survived in the harsh environment. 

But that’s not all. There are also lots of hiking trails, beautiful views, and even wildlife like elk and black bears to see in the park. 

So if you love history and nature, you should definitely visit Mesa Verde National Park!

Southwest Region

Utah

Arches National Park

Arches National Park is a must-see for anyone interested in seeing some of the most spectacular natural formations on Earth. Located in Moab, the park was established in 1971 and covers over 46,000 acres of land that encompasses over 2,000 arches and other rock formations.

There are many things you can do at Arches National Park including hiking trails or easy walks; exploring the park by car via scenic drives; visiting Delicate Arch at sunrise or sunset for stunning views or biking along different trails throughout the park. Take advantage of ranger-led activities like star parties during summer months when days are longer. 

Bryce Canyon National Park

Bryce Canyon National Park, located in southern Utah, is famous for its unique rock formations, known as hoodoos. These towering spires of rock are formed by erosion over millions of years, and create a stunning landscape that is unlike anything else on Earth. 

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can hike the park’s many trails or even go horseback riding through the canyon.

Canyonlands National Park

Located in southeastern Utah, Canyonlands National Park is divided into four districts: Island in the Sky, Needles, Maze and The Rivers. Its name comes from its colorful canyons that stretch for miles.

The park has a wide range of wildlife including bighorn sheep, elk and mule deer as well as snakes. Be careful of rattlesnakes and coral snakes. You’ll also find many birds like sandpipers along with other animals such as bats.

Capitol Reef National Park

Capitol Reef National Park is located in south-central Utah, and was named for the reef of Triassic sandstone that crosses the park. This park features a large number of natural arches, including Landscape Arch, Double Arch and Tower Arch.

The park’s topography includes cliffs up to 2,000 feet high that were formed by erosion along the Waterpocket Fold – an upheaval in earth’s crust that occurred during the Laramide orogeny some 65 million years ago. Crazy, right?!

Zion National Park

Zion National Park, located in southern Utah, is a wonderland of towering sandstone cliffs, narrow slot canyons, and lush forests. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can hike the famous Angels Landing Trail, which offers stunning views of the park from above. 

And if you’re looking for a more relaxing experience in Zion, you can float down the Virgin River on a tube or explore the park’s many scenic drives.

Zion National Park is one of the most visited national parks in the west coast.

Arizona

Grand Canyon National Park

The Grand Canyon is one of the world’s most famous natural wonders, and for good reason. 

This massive chasm in northern Arizona was formed by the Colorado River over millions of years, creating a breathtaking landscape that is unlike anything else on Earth. 

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can hike to the bottom of the canyon and camp overnight, or take a mule ride along the rim. Just be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen!

This is one of the most known west coast parks!

Petrified Forest National Park

The Petrified Forest is a park in Arizona where you can see some of the most amazing fossils in the world.

The park is home to huge logs that are over 200 million years old! These logs were once part of a forest, but over time they were buried and turned into stone. 

You can go hiking or driving through the park to see these amazing fossils up close. And if you’re lucky, you might even see some of the animals that live in the park, like pronghorns or coyotes. 

So if you love history and nature, you should definitely visit Petrified Forest National Park!

Saguaro National Park

Hello there! Have you ever heard of Saguaro National Park? It’s a really unique place in Arizona where you can see some of the most incredible cacti in the world! 

The park is home to the saguaro cactus, which can grow up to 50 feet tall and live for over 200 years! You can go hiking, camping, or even just drive through the park to see these amazing plants up close. 

There are also lots of other types of cacti, beautiful desert landscapes, and even wildlife like javelinas and coyotes to see in the park.

New Mexico

White Sands National Park

The White Sands National Park is located in New Mexico. Here you can see some of the most incredible sand dunes in the world! 

The park is home to huge white sand dunes that were formed by the wind over thousands of years. You can go hiking, sandboarding, or even just relax and play in the sand! 

here are also lots of other things to see and do in the park, like stargazing at night, watching the sunset over the dunes, or even going on guided tours to learn about the plants and animals that live in the desert.
