Destin, Florida is a popular vacation spot known for its pristine beaches and breathtaking views. Among the many attractions in this gulf coast paradise, there is one hidden gem that captivates the hearts of visitors year after year, Crab Island Destin Florida. 

We visit Destin every year, and even lived nearby for a year back in my twenties! Crab Island has always been a fun spot to visit and soak up the sun. We recently brought our kids and enjoyed a few hours of swimming.

You can only get to Crab Island by boat or jet ski. There are numerous rental companies in Destin that offer a variety of watercraft options to suit your preferences and group size. Some popular rental providers include “Destin Boat Rentals” and “Crab Island Watersports.”

Taking a Cruise to Crab Island

If you aren’t wanting to rent your own boat or jet skis, you can take a cruise to crab island and let somebody else drive while you just enjoy the ride! There are lots of different cruises you can take to get to Crab Island, below are a couple of favorites.

A favorite are the Cruisin’ Tiki Bars that go to Crab Island. It is exactly what it sounds like, a tiki bar that floats!

The Dangers of Crab Island Destin Florida

While Crab Island is a fantastic destination for fun and relaxation, it’s crucial to be aware of the potential dangers. 

The area is known for its strong currents, which can be challenging for swimmers of every ability. 

Always exercise caution and ensure that you and your loved ones follow proper safety protocols. Wearing life jackets and staying within designated swimming areas is strongly advised.

Also when you arrive at Crab Island and lower the anchor, make sure it is securely in the sand before leaving your boat. I may or may not know what it is like to watch your boat drift away. 

One year when we rented a boat and traveled over to Crab Island, we didn’t secure the anchor into the sand bed. It is actually much more difficult than it sounds because the sand is so soft and powdery.

As my family and I were swimming around we began to notice that our boat was FLOATING AWAY. Thankfully it wasn’t very busy at Crab Island that day and there were no boats around us to bump into. My husband was able to climb aboard and save the day. But please heed our warning!

How much does it cost to go to Crab Island

Crab Island is a sandbar in the water, so it is free! The only cost associated with Crab Island is how you are going to get there. You can rent boats, jet skis, or take a cruise.

Can you swim to Crab Island in Destin Florida?

It would be very unwise to swim to Crab Island in Destin Florida. The currents are extremely strong going from the bay to the gulf and sadly people have lost their lives by being taking out and not being able to swim out of it.

Are there bathrooms on Crab Island?

Because Crab Island is just a sand bar, there are no bathrooms. However, some boats might have bathrooms that are anchored there.

Can you buy drinks on Crab Island?

During them summer months there are usually boats and dinghies that are stationed at Crab Island that sell drinks and ice cream. However, if it is off season, there are typically no vendors to buy drinks from.
