As East Coast New Englanders, my family and I have fallen head over heels for the breathtaking landscapes and natural wonders found in this magical corner of the country. It was truly an unforgettable adventure!

Southern Utah‘s allure is undeniable, a place where adventure and serenity meet. It is an enchanting region where you can lose yourself in the grandeur of nature and reconnect with your inner explorer. Our journey through Bryce Canyon and Zion will forever remain etched in our memories, you are in for an adventure!

Bryce Canyon National Park

Nestled in the heart of Southern Utah, Bryce Canyon is like no other. It feels as if you stepped onto another planet entirely. The park is known for its unique rock formations called hoodoos, which seem to rise from the ground like colorful spires.

You will marvel at the breathtaking views of the amphitheaters and canyons below. The rich reds, oranges, and pinks of the rocks painted a picture-perfect scene against the bright blue sky.

The park offers trails of various difficulty levels, so you can choose one that suits your family’s needs. For a kid-friendly adventure, opt for the Queen’s Garden Trail. As you make your way down into the canyon, you will discover unique rock formations that resemble creatures and castles.

On the way

Along the drive from Bryce Canyon to Zion, there are several fun stops that you and your family can enjoy. These places add an extra dose of excitement and adventure to your journey. Here are a few potential stops that will make your road trip even more memorable:

1. Red Canyon

Located just east of Bryce Canyon, Red Canyon is often referred to as “Little Bryce.” It features stunning red rock formations and offers a variety of hiking and biking trails. Take a leisurely stroll along the Hoodoo Trail or rent bikes to explore the scenic Red Canyon Bike Trail.

2. Dixie National Forest

Dixie National Forest in Southern Utah is an awe-inspiring destination that offers a wealth of natural wonders and captivating experiences. Hikers can explore its scenic trails, leading to towering red rock formations and hidden waterfalls. Wildlife lovers will be delighted by the chance to spot elusive species such as mule deer and wild turkeys.

3. Kanab

This charming town serves as a gateway to both Bryce Canyon and Zion. Stop by the Little Hollywood Movie Museum to learn about the area’s history of movie productions, or visit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, the largest no-kill animal sanctuary in the United States, where you can interact with rescued animals.

4. Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is located between Kanab and Zion. This unique park showcases vibrant coral-colored sand dunes that offer endless opportunities for sandboarding, ATV riding, and hiking. The contrasting colors of the dunes against the surrounding landscape make for a picturesque stop.

5. Grafton Ghost Town

If you’re a fan of history, take a detour to Grafton Ghost Town, an abandoned settlement from the 1800s. Explore the preserved buildings, including a schoolhouse and a cemetery, and learn about the challenges faced by the early pioneers.

These fun stops along the drive from Bryce Canyon to Zion will add excitement and variety to your journey. So, take your time, explore these unique places, and make lasting memories along the way.

Zion National Park

Zion National Park is known for its towering cliffs, lush greenery, and the mighty Virgin River. This Southern Utah park is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers.

One of the most popular hikes is The Narrows. This trail takes you through a stunning slot canyon, where you’ll be walking in the river itself. You will be surrounded by towering walls that seem to touch the sky. It is an exhilarating experience.

Angels Landing is known world wide and is called the “scariest hike in America”, and for good reason! Angels Landing is a strenuous 5.4-mile hike in Zion National Park that offers stunning views of the canyon and the Virgin River. It was becoming so dangerously crowded that the park finally started a permit program to try and limit the number of people on the trail at any given time.

For a less challenging but equally rewarding hike, try the Emerald Pools trail. As you trek through the shaded canyon, you will discover tranquil pools and cascading waterfalls. It is the perfect spot for a refreshing break and some well-deserved rest.

It depends on how much you want to see and do but I think 3-4 days in Zion is enough to explore the popular sites.
