Acadia National Park in Maine is a breathtaking natural wonderland that offers visitors a vast array of activities and attractions to enjoy. We live just a few hours away and visit every year. We rarely do the same itinerary twice.
Covering over 49,000 acres, Acadia is home to rugged coastlines, lush forests, serene lakes, and majestic mountains that make it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.
Whether you’re seeking adventure or simply looking to relax and take in the stunning scenery, Acadia has something for everyone. Explore the park’s vast network of hiking trails, or take a dip in one of its crystal-clear lakes.
Whatever your interests, Acadia National Park is sure to leave you with lasting memories and a sense of awe at the beauty of the natural world. From hiking to kayaking to scenic drives, this guide will outline some of the top things to do in Acadia National Park over a 5-day period.
Day 1:
On your first day in Acadia, it’s a good idea to start with a scenic drive along the Park Loop Road, which offers some of the most breathtaking views in the park.
Stop at popular spots like Thunder Hole, Otter Cliff, and Jordan Pond for stunning photo opportunities.
Then, head to the Jordan Pond House for lunch and indulge in their famous popovers while taking in the serene view of Jordan Pond. This is a great start to 5 Days in Acadia National Park!
Day 2:
Spend your second day exploring the natural wonders of Acadia on foot. Hike the Precipice Trail for a challenging climb and stunning views of the coastline. (Be aware that the Precipice Trail is only open during certain times of the year)
The Beehive Trail also makes for an adrenaline-filled adventure. This is a great hike to get your heart pumping!
If you want more of a physical challenge, hike up Cadillac Mountain! We love hiking up the north ridge trail because it is shorter (but steeper!).
If you’re looking for something more leisurely, explore the carriage roads that wind through the park’s forests and around its lakes. Eagle Lake is a beautiful sight with mountains surrounding it. Most carriage roads are very hilly, but if you go out and back from Eagle Lake to Bubble Pond, it isn’t that bad!
Day 3:
On your third day, get out on the water and kayak around the rugged coastline of Acadia.
Experience the thrill of paddling through the waves and spotting wildlife like seals and seabirds.
You could also take a whale watching tour from Bar Harbor and see humpback whales, fin whales, and minke whales up close.
If you are in Bar Harbor, be sure to check out Bar Harbor’s island land bridge.
Also, be sure to check out some of the area’s delicious cuisine. Start with a lobster roll from one of the many seafood shacks in Bar Harbor, then head to the Atlantic Brewing Company for a tasting of their locally brewed beer.
Day 4:
Embrace your inner child and go for a real life scavenger hunt to find an abandoned plane crash! There is a plane crash located on the side of Cedar Swamp Mountain.
For all of the specifics I created detailed instructions for you! We were told about this from a local and found the debris site without any issues.
After this hike, take it easy and go to the beach, or sit on the coastal rocks and take in the scenery.
Day 5:
On your last day in Acadia, hike up the fairly easy Gorham Mountain trailhead. At the summit you will see breathtaking views of the coastline.
After the hike, stop by a local farm stand to pick up some fresh produce and have a picnic at one of the park’s many picnic areas.
In the evening, watch the sunset from the top of Cadillac Mountain. This is the highest point on the eastern seaboard, for a truly memorable end to your Acadia adventure.
Vehicle reservations for Cadillac Summit Road are required May 24 through October 22, 2023. Watching the sunset on Cadillac is a perfect way to end 5 Days in Acadia National Park.
What is the best month to visit Acadia?
Many people would say the fall is the best time to visit Acadia. Because we live in New England, our favorite time to go to Acadia is in May. There are less crowds and everything is beginning to bloom. Near the end of May the ground is dry from the winter runoff and the carriage roads are opened!
